English: Drawing of a Kater pendulum from a 1920 physics textbook. Invented in 1817 by British physicist Henry Kater, it was used to measure the local acceleration of gravity in geophysical surveys. The labeled parts are identified in the text as: (a) opposing knife edges on either end from which pendulum is suspended, (b) fine adjustment weight operated by adjustment screw, (c) coarse adjustment weight which could be moved along rod and fixed with setscrew, (d) bob, (e) pointers for reading. Alterations to image: rotated 90° CCW, removed part labels and replaced with different labels in color, converted from JPG to 16 color PNG.
